Skip Barber National at Road Atlanta

We're now halfway through the summer race season (ALREADY?!?!)... I have no idea how this happened. Anyway, I'm dubbing this the National thread for this race week at Road Atlanta. It's gonna be crazy with the drivers remaining so close to each other in the standings. Nail biting action, I tell you!

Also, joining the natl drivers this weekend will be Masters Dr. Mike Edwards and Greg Strelzoff! Round of applause, everyone!

See [some of] you soon!

Rounds 9 & 10 Preview: Skip Barber National at Road Atlanta

Lakeville, Conn. (Jul. 18). Officially halfway through the 2011 season, the contention for the champion title remains open for the 2011 BFGoodrich/Skip Barber National presented by Mazda. The next double header event in the equal car championship takes place this week at Road Atlanta in Braselton, Georgia. As with the previous event at Road America last month, the draft on the 2.54-mile, 12 turn road course will play a crucial role in adding to the strategic element to the on track action for Rounds 9 and 10.
With three wins and five podiums, twenty-two year old Scott Anderson currently holds a two point lead over eighteen year old Brandon Newey who currently has two wins and six podiums. Close behind and sitting comfortably in third in the standings is MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development driver Trent Hindman who is the only driver to place in the top five for all eight rounds. This week, expect to see strong battles over the fourth through seventh spots in the standings, as Thomas McGregor, MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development driver Danilo Estrela, Sebastian Ordonez and Shelby Blackstock all sit within just seventeen points of each other.
The Skip Barber National racers will be racing in conjunction with the Skip Barber Summer Formula Series and the MAZDASPEED Challenge. Session times will not be time certain, so keep up with all the action on twitter.com/skipbarbernatl.The first lapping session will take place Wednesday, July 20th, and the first official practice session will be Thursday, July 21st.

A little birdie named Peter Ludwig said he might be in the National mix as well just to keep Greg and Dr. Mike honest.

Yes, indeedy it is a very deep, and scary talented group. There is nowhere to hide. I'm not sure what Greg has been smoking there on the left Coast if he thinks I have a prayer in hell of getting on the podium in this group, but methinks my buddy ol' pal might be engaging in a little proactive psy ops.

Spot on. It's all entertaining, but watching him trash-talking the parents is particularly hilarious.

It started raining soon after the start of the second session for group 1. They blackflagged the session since everyone was on slicks, then spent the next hour changing all the active cars to treads. Both groups then had the second session in drying conditions which made things very interesting

YEAP! I was in group 1 and had to pit to changed tires (over 30 cars, 2-3 min per car)... Than went out on rain tires when it was still slightly raining. It was amazing seeing different parts of the track drying up much faster than other's. Turn 3 and turn 6 were the 1st to dry up and using partial rain line / race line was very interesting to adapt differently each lap. Overall, amazing time and great learning curve!

Round 9 & 10 Wrap Up: Anderson Dominates Road Atlanta

Lakeville, Conn. (Jul. 26). After an unbearably hot weekend at Road Atlanta, Rounds 9 and 10 of the BFGoodrich/Skip Barber National presented by Mazda complete, Scott Anderson continues to hold the top position in the battle for the championship. Points leader Scott Anderson had an almost perfect weekend, winning both races and one California Scents Pole position at Road Atlanta. Increasing his points lead from two to thirteen points over Brandon Newey, Anderson is not only that much closer to becoming the 2011 champion, but he also closes in on the grand prize of a scholarship to compete in the full 2012 season of the Cooper Tires Presents the USF2000 Championship powered by Mazda.

Ordonez (7), McGregor (4), Hindman (9), Anderson (54), Estrela (73), Newey (46), Blackstock (74) and Aragones (34)
Race 1, Round 9 of 16
Championship points leader Scott Anderson lead the field to green, with Thomas McGregor quickly putting pressure on for the lead position. Going four wide in turn ten of the first lap, Sebastian Ordonez took the lead over Brandon Newey, MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development driver Trent Hindman, Thomas McGregor and Scott Anderson. Using the draft at the historic track to his full advantage, Hindman made a big run on the inside and took the lead in lap two. By lap five, Hindman and McGregor pulled away from the pack with a five car-length lead, but Ordonez and Newey quickly gained the top two positions. Ordonez and Newey battling over the lead allowed MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development driver Danilo Estrela to slip by and take over.
Laps nine through eleven consisted of the Ordonez, Newey and Estrela traded the lead position through every turn, fighting hard and racing clean. Suffering from a possible mechanical issue, Shelby Blackstock fell to the back of the pack from his sixth starting position.
In the penultimate lap, McGregor and Estrela had contact in turn ten, ending the race early for both of the racers. McGregor finished a lap down in the pits with a broken right rear, and Estrela stranded on track two laps behind. In the final lap, Anderson took the lead, followed closely by Newey. Newey made a last attempt at a pass coming to the checker flag, but finished 0.081 seconds behind the leader. Sebastian Ordonez finished third, earning his third podium of the weekend. MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development driver Trent Hindman finished fourth, and Franco Aragones received his first top five finish of the season, finishing in fifth.

Race 2, Round 8 of 16
With his third California Scents Pole position of the season, Sebastian Ordonez had a strong start, leading MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development driver Trent Hindman and the rest of the field through the first lap. Heading up the hill out of turn one, Hindman took the lead, fighting off McGregor as he tried to gain position. Side by side into turn ten, McGregor finally grabbed the lead, only to have Trent quickly regain the position. Brandon Newey held third while Ordonez and MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development driver Danilo Estrela held fourth and fifth.
As the field shifted into a train to better work the draft, Hindman pulled away from the pack, gaining a three car length lead. Near the halfway point, Estrela made a dive bomb move down the hill approaching turn ten, advancing to third position. Meanwhile, Anderson slowly caught up to Hindman and the pair worked the draft together to distance themselves from the pack. The rest of the field quickly realized the workings of the lead duo and all worked together to catch up to the leaders. Hindman lead Anderson, Ordonez, Newey and Blackstock with five laps to go.
In lap 11, Estrela and McGregor had contact leaving turn one, once again ending Estrela’s race early. New race leader Sebastian Ordonez became an unfortunate victim when motor issues ended his race early with just three laps to go. For the remainder of the race Hindman, Newey and Anderson fought for the lead, with Anderson taking home the win. Hindman came in second, earning his fourth podium of the season. Shelby Blackstock earned his second podium of the season, starting seventh and finishing in third, also winning him the California Scents Most Progressive award.
