Specific workouts for racers
I was looking for some workouts designed for race car drivers. I don't know of any or anyone that specializes in that field. Just curious if anyone knows anything about this

Re: Specific workouts for racers
I'd start with Gerardo and MHP. I know Gerardo practices a strict stretching regimen, and MHP has done ashtanga and centering exercises.

Re: Specific workouts for racers
IMO Yoga is the single best physical preparation for racing. It combines strength, flexibility, core, balance, endurance, and mindset. It targets frequently neglected muscles of the back, shoulders, hips, and legs that are important for stabilizing your body at speed. Racing consists of periodic gradual contractions of these muscles as one is going through a corner, interspersed with relaxation on the straights. That is exactly what a yoga experience is like.

Greg, I had never heard of this so I checked it out. Sounds a lot like what I do. I started doing yoga as rehab for the neck and back problems I had from my work, and when I started racing I recognized that it was perfect for getting me ready physically for being in the car. I don't go to a gym anymore. Yoga, plus pilates if you want more ab work than yoga, and something cardio like swimming or biking is perfect preparation for racing.
But Nick, you don't need any more help. For you I recommend ice cream, burgers, supersized fries, sody pop, doughnuts, fried chicken and chitlins, and a wide screen high def TV for MTV marathons and 24hr video games. And maybe you can drive something other than the #10 car. (and you thought no one noticed)

Re: Specific workouts for racers
not impressed with pitfit.
racing fitness at the skip level is primarily aerobic.
The key is to elevate the lactate threshold to prevent acidosis, but at Nicks age that rarely occurs with 30 min sprints.
At higher levels heat tolerance, and strength (with aero) comes into play.
but the key is aerobic training to est the base to prevent anerobic metabolism, which costs time.
Yoga is great for flexibility, as well, and combined with heat, helps the tolerance...

Re: Specific workouts for racers
Thanks for all the great replies! Im going to look it to a few things. I know that right now at my age it is not as critical to be in the best shape for the skip barber races (more of a sprint) as It will be in the future. Dr. Mike if John has any workout suggestion or advice for his personal experience I would be interested for sure.

Re: Specific workouts for racers
Good points Dr Mike. But even if Skippy car doesn't require the utmost in fitness, the fitter one is, the easier it is and the more capacity you have. And hopefully Nick will be moving up to more demanding classes soon.
Good article on lactate threshold and training here for those unfamiliar with it:
http://www.unm.edu/~lkravitz/Article...threshold.html
Examples of training could be:
Hot yoga (aka Bikram yoga) for heat tolerance
Lap swimming for continuous lactate threshold training
Biking (esp on a route that has a few hills thrown in) or alternating run/walk for interval training

Re: Specific workouts for racers
Sorry Nick, I should have said that ashtanga is a type of yoga, sometimes called "power yoga". I practice in a room with the thermometer set at 85, I believe, but by the end of the session it's often well above 95 (especially in the summer). Bikram yoga is practiced set around 108, but of course the temp rises during the practice (and based on how many people are in the room and how big it is).
The yoga will definitely work on strengthening your core, as well as your balance. If you want to get some extra core work in, you can always buy the excercise ball the right size for you (55cm, 65cm, etc.) and use it as your computer chair. You'd be surprised what not slouching while you're online can do.

I should try these.
So far "open wallet, hand over Amex, repeat" is not working as well as hoped.

Not bad for your age, but you gotta work on your endurance, Poppers. I can go 9 or 10, no sweat.

If you would like to donate a wide screen high def TV and a PS3 I would be glad to put them to use . Also I think you should get your eyes checked, maybe you know an eye doctor?? I have drove the 40 car at VIR and WG, 36 car at LRP, 35 car at Tremblant, 10 car at RA both times I think Skip Barber does an excellent job with the cars!!!

I thought Lenny Kravitz played guitar? Didn't know he was a Ph'D. What a well rounded individual.

Re: Specific workouts for racers
Shifter or Rotax karting for 45 or more minutes in a row.
Endurance karting at the indoor facilities. The 12 and 24 hour races can really work you at the edge for a long time. A double stint at the VLK facility was the hardest thing I've ever done on four wheels.
While they aren't the traditional workout routines they are a bit more fun that most. I am quite envious of my buddies who are next to the nice indoor facilites like GPNY, VLK, F1, etc.

Dance is a great workout for all of those areas. There were always a number of football players in dance classes when I was at Hotchkiss. Definitely makes you light on your feet.

Re: Specific workouts for racers
No one has yet mentioned rowing, which is a great way to work on cardiovascular fitness without any impact on joints. If you are thinking of getting an erg, or simply want to see what it is all about, go to the best, which is Concept2. Here is a link to the website: http://www.concept2.com/us/default.asp

And lest we forget... the number one ultimate workout for racers is... driving a race car.

Couldn't you tell from the quality of his lyrics? The man is Shakespeare in tight pants.
So tell me why we got to die
And kill each other one by one
We've got to love and rub-a-dub
We've got to dance and be in love
But what I really want to know is
Are you gonna go my way ?
And I got to got to know
- OR -
Let's fade into the sun
Let your spirit fly
Where we are one
Just for a little fun
Oh oh oh yeah !
I want to get away
I want to fly away
Yeah yeah yeah
Clearly a savant of advanced intellect and learning.

Re: Specific workouts for racers
I second what Mike said about aerobic fitness. I like to skip rope. Hadn't done it since I quit wrestling in high school. To be honest it took a few minutes to get back into it but doing that for 10 minutes will get your HR up. Also good hand foot, rythm thing going on. I like to finish off my regular work out with a couple hundred reps.
I also think the key to enduring in a race car is learning to, "relax your hands, shoulders, take a deep breath..." when you can.
Sound familiar? I used to get into a full body clench in the race car. Now that I don't I realize how much easier it can be to endure and drive better to boot.
