yeah i just read this!!! verry bothered by this!! I def. hope a speedy recovery and that the surgery's on his hand goes well! Gonna be cool though seeing a Senna wearing the black and gold again on the field. sad Kubica won't be there for the 1st race as Renault can really use him for points! we all remember R. Kubica was the only person to qualify in q3 every race until the end of the season so seeing him out is very sad!
great driver. sad to see him doing something silly like rally with F1 on the line... priorities.
Exactly! and before a new intense season about to begin in a month! If you really want to rally, retire from F1 like Kimi Raikkonen did and join the WRC!
very scary-- kubica's car speared by end of guard rail-- protruding from grille
crazy dangerous course-- lots of projecting hazards, unprotected ends of armco
just don't think it's worth it
Whew! Agreed, and "speared" is precisely the word to use. That would take a lot of force to bend some armco that far around. Might have saved him from tumbling over the edge, however.

translation of the surgeon's interview. He had to repair broken bones, reconnect multiple tendons on both flexor and extensor sides of the forearm, both major nerves (median and ulnar) and major blood vessels, meaning that all these structures were cut apart. It will be amazing if he recovers f1-level function in this arm/hand, but as the surgeon said, racers are so far beyond normal human physiological capacity, and the medical care was clearly first class and it seems prompt as well

“Professor Mario Igor Rossello, Director for the Regional Centre of Hand Surgery at San Paolo Hospital in Savona: ‘It has been a very important and difficult operation. Robert Kubica’s right forearm was cut in two places, with significant lesions to the bones and the tendons. We did our best to rebuild the functions of the forearm.
‘It took seven doctors, split into two teams and a total of seven hours to complete the operation. One team was the emergency task force from the hospital of San Paolo (Savona) that is normally appointed to treat this sort of injury, while the other team came from the orthopaedic department of the Santa Corona Hospital (Pietra Ligure).
‘At the end of the operation, Robert’s hand was well vascularised and warm, which is encouraging. Following the surgery, Robert Kubica will remain under permanent monitoring overnight because his condition remains serious.’

Reason: more info
Injury sounds similar to Alessandro Nannini's helicopter crash back in 1990 that ended his promising F1 career. He did go on to be successful in touring cars though. Hopefully 20 years of advances in surgical techniques will prove better.

Re: Kubica Rally Crash
He's in our prayers.

Amen. He shoulda stayed home and played with his X-Box or Playstation if he was bored. He could very well loose a very promising career over this. Even if he heals he will be out of the car for a very long time.
Yes everything is risked when you have a top rank F1 career and you get into any other racing conveyance. And rallying is one of the riskiest choices as hittable objects are closer and more lethal, but the odds on being speared by a guard rail? When have we seen this before? This is right up there with Zanardi's crash in '06. A perfect storm of circumstance that produced an absolutely horrifying result.
If you're a racer, you want to race. Risk assessment is part of the game but something freaky can always happen.

From the info above it seems F1 success may no longer be in his future...hope that's not the case, seems like such a good guy, def a great driver, prayers sent his way.
Very ugly - most rallies are crazy dangerous but the video from this segment looked particularly nuts - first car to arrive at crash scene
Kubica is proof you can be a decent, humble, non-prima-donna and still bring it like a banshee. What a good guy. I loved to watch him qualify, and attack during the race. I will miss him, but more important I pray that he recovers successfully and without any further problems, given how complicated his condition is and that more surgery lies in his near future.
cdh: same vid as post 7, I believe.

Wow... That's a great interview. All you can do is applaud his spirit and pull for the guy. Great mind set. Bravo.
