I need a new computer

My old one is barely staying alive. Anyway, I have had pc's forever but I was always interested in getting an Apple. I have heard good things and really no complaints about them compared to pc's. So, I was looking at the mac mini. I use my computer to email, surf the web, watch racing videos, MS Word, play solitaire and that's probably it. I don't play games on it, I use my xbox for that.

The rep at the Apple store told me to stay away from the mac mini b/c it's more of an entry level product into the Apple community. He told me to buy an iMac and if I couldn't just yet, then I should save my money and not waste it on the mac mini. He said the mini was not upgradeable, and it gets slowed down if I have more than 3 programs running simultaneously. For instance, I usually have AIM, Outlook Express, and Mozilla Firefox open at the same time. My current PC was a $400 eMachine's from when I was becoming a Junior at college which was 4 years ago and it worked fine the whole time. Will the mac fit my needs? I was thinking of the 1.66 processor w/ 1 gig of memory and an 80 gig HD. Nothing too crazy. I don't want to be spending anything near an exorbitant amount of money on this but I do have some money to spend. I would like to keep it under $750/800. Any comments or suggestions are completely welcome. Thank you.

Re: I need a new computer

I have a macintosh, it rock. it never breaks, freezes or loses my shit. Sometimes I wish it did. I got the G4 ibook and its great. I would highly, highly recommend a Mac. If you still have your student ID use it to get a discount. I would stay with a laptop, the ibook's are great, the powerbooks are better/different. I use my comp for the same reason you do, email, TJR, music, work. I bought microsoft office installed it, never looked back. The powerbooks, all though very cool, have too much stuff i would never use. So i saved a couple hundred bucks and got the ibook. It will do everything you want.

Re: I need a new computer

Ari -

If you want a CHEAP but good computer, I'd go eMachines...you can get a VERY reliable an cheap desktop for a few hundred bucks. eMachines was a client of mine, I helped them get sold to Gateway (AVOID a Gway). The eMachines boxes are 110% industry standard, very reliable and get good reviews - but they are "entry level". BTW eMachines laptops? skip.

If you want to spend $, Macs are great - however, if you're going to use your PC for "work" (i.e. integrate into a business network) there are still a lot of complexities out there and support is not great....I can send you a good article on Apple's recent foray onto the Intel chipset (Sy might like it too).

At the end of the day, you need to make a personal decision - Mac vs Wintel/PC. The Mac route is straightforward - a box and the goodies are the cost of a full race weekend. On the Wintel side, you can range a great laptop from the low-end Dell/HP flavor up to a Sony that can do some tremendous stuff.....if you're desktop oriented, and a gamer, your best pick is a custom-built (beware of support issues) or pick up an Alienware box, which are simply bulletproof and very pricey.

The MOST important thing these days on the Wintel side is 1) get a Vista-ready processor 2) AMD vs Intel - doesn't matter 3) configuration is key - memory, HDD size, Video Card, etc.

Re: I need a new computer

Thanks Al. I know how good eMachines are. The machine that is dying was an eMachines and it lasted over 4 years. I just wanted to know about the Mac Mini b/c the Macbook is a bit too pricey for me. If I'm only looking at the Mac Mini or a similar priced PC, what would you do?

Re: I need a new computer

Ari,

Although I trust the Apple Stores, some of the reps have gone to salesmanship school.

You can run more than 3 apps on a Mac Mini, no problem, as long as they're simple apps. AIM, Outlook Express, and Mozilla Firefox are simple. Sometimes your browser will use more processing power, but the other two will not. Mac Mini is not for people who do intense Photoshop or video editing. That's where a larger iMac, Macbook Pro, or Mac Pro come in.

Your needs are simple enough. The Mini is fine. It's only 25%-30% slower than a 17-inch iMac, and that is only apparent when you max out the processor. Everything you will do will be just as fast on the Mini as on the iMac, or at least very very close.

That said, if you can afford another $400 for the $999 17-inch iMac, do it. It will last you much longer with its ability to handle future software. The only upgrade you are likely to do in the future is to add RAM. The way it comes is fine for you for now. The Mac Mini is a deal for you only if you already own a monitor, keyboard, and mouse that you like. The Mac Mini doesn't come with any of this. The iMac comes with all this, so it just might be the hot ticket for you.

Don't forget that owning an Apple computer means you can go into the Apple Store and ask real experts on how to use it. Literally, any question you have, as long as its related to Apple software or the computer itself, you can get help there in person. No other computer company has this kind of tech support and personal training with their software.

Cheers,

Re: I need a new computer

I don't know about the mini, Ari, but we just bought Julia an iBook and she loves it. I've got a two year old G4 Powerbook and 6 year old G3 Powerbook and both are used all the time and have been very reliable. I'd save a big longer and get an iBook. I don't think you'll ever be sorry. My two cents.

Re: I need a new computer

I echo what Gerardo says about spending the extra for an iMac. I bought a G5 iMac last year and IMO it is the best computer in the world for what you want to do, and has the capacity and capabilities you'll want if your needs expand. The mac mini is just the CPU. the iMac is everything you need right out of the box. Incredible display, boots up in seconds, intuitive and easy to use, never crashing, never infected (I bought mine after my laptop from work, a Dell, was terminally infected TWICE in 4 months despite antiviral software and had to have the whole hard drive wiped clean and reformatted--what a pain and expense). And now that the price has come down, I can't see any reason not to get it. It is money well-invested and you'll be glad you did.

Re: I need a new computer

Thank you Gerardo, Pat, Al, Chris, and Slowhands. Since, the Mac Mini is out, I guess I'll have to wait and save for an iMac, although the MacBook looks very enticing. My old PC(eMachines) was an AMD Athlon XP 1800+ w/ 256mb ram, 60 gb HD and onboard video. I went up to 1 gig of ram and added an 80gb HD. So, if I get a 1.8 processor, 1 gig of ram, 80 gb HD w/ a bigger external one, I don't see why the Macbook wont work me for a few years. I may as well pay a little more than the iMac and get the portability of the book. I'm pretty much set on going Apple based off of Gerardo, Pat, Slowhands, and Al's recommendations, I just wish they were the same price as a PC.

Re: I need a new computer

My ibook is 4 years old and i don't see any reason for me to upgrade for awhi. I download the weekly updates and thats it. Get the extra warranty. I dropped mine once and they gave me a new motherboard, my video card broke out of warranty, but was only 250 bucks to fix. The ibook has all the stuff to make cool racing videos too!

If you go Mac (which I suggest, unless you want to run games) and live near a store look at Pro Care, very useful for getting through problems, repairs or just learning more. You have to buy it in-store and usally they don't tell you about it unless you ask.

Re: I need a new computer

Ari... I converted both my laptop and home desktop to Mac's over the last year. No reason to ever look back. I have Microsoft office to run my spreadsheets and Word docs between the PC environment at work and am running the Parallels program on the new desktop so I can run windows programs as well. Works pretty slick.

Ditto what Bobo says on the support at the Apple store. The Pro-care mentioned in the last post is $100 for a years worth of 1 hour sessions in store with an expert for most any apple application or hardware question or training issue. You go on-line and sign up a time slot at the local store and you show up for your session.

Sy...what is "you know what"?

...ahem.

Arig, to return to this thread , you can get certified refurbished Macbooks and iBooks (if you want the old G4, which was a great system and less likely to be infected than the new Intel) from the Apple Store online for as little as $900. Check it out.

Re: I need a new computer

I was going to post later tonight about what I bought. I hate to say it but I bought a Gateway desktop from Best Buy. It's an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ with 2 gig's of ram and a 250gig HD. I also got a nice 19" widescreen lcd and an all in one canon printer all for $850. Down the line when I can afford it, I'll buy a macbook but for now and for what I need and have, this computer is very fast and pretty cheap. I was already at $1243 for a macbook and I didn't really see the point in paying more for an apple and not getting the macbook(I was looking at an iMac). I appreciate everyone's advice(even though I disregarded it all). This computer will let me play iRacing's sim when it comes out, surf the net, and email for a reasonable price. I'll join the other side next time.

the worst part about asking for advice is that you give a bunch of opinionated people the chance they long for-- telling someone else what to do.

the best part is you can put them all in their places by ignoring them.

Good for you.

how about 6 months after I load Vista on here. I didn't cheap out and get an older dual core processor like Pentium D, I got a reasonably priced good, newer processor that should last me a few years. The way I saw this purchase was to tide me over til I can afford a Mac and it's also a computer that I can use to run racing simulators.

Sounds like a nice pc Ari. What type of graphics card did you get? That is just as important as the cpu in determining how well games will run on it. The top of the line right now is nVidea's 8800. A decent card would be something like an ATI x1600 or an nVidea 7600.

I don't think these ads are very good. In my opinion they only make you want to buy a Mac if you already like Macs. Everything they focus on is not really true, with a couple of exceptions. They also remind me of those political ads in which the condidate just says what their opponent cannot do instead of focusing on what they can do.

Re: I need a new computer

If you are devoted to PC's then they aren't very pc but they do make their point eloquently. They are brilliantly simple humorous illustrations of the strengths of a Mac. Not sure what you are suggesting isn't true but in fact all the ads focus on what a Mac does well while also illustrating what a PC does less well, even though trying hard to keep up. It is, after all, a Mac commercial.

Re: I need a new computer

I used to be very much a mac fan, about 10 years ago. But since then I have found that the pc and windows has caught up and now i don't see a difference in the systems regarding ease of use. I now prefer pcs because, in my opinion, they are a better programming platform.

The macs are also very hard to debug if something goes wrong. I have had two mac crash on me and had to completely reinstall the operating system in order to solve the problems. I've never had that happen on a pc.

Buy, yes, they are mac ads, and will try to make the mac look as good as possible. I just wish they wouldn't play to what people think is true, rather than what is actually true.

Re: I need a new computer

There are THREE topics I won't engage on - 1) religion 2) politics and 3) women in an open forum.

Since the Mac vs PC argument, at this point, is PURELY religious, I'll stay out and simply provide the facts...

Having said that, the Mac "community" (5% market share, overwhelmingly in education and graphics/creative industries) is a very vocal, but small, minority. If you like it, great.

Mac OS has gotten better - it's a cool machine. However, computers today are commodities, where cool and "ROI" don't coexist. Additionally, the availability of software, support, etc etc for Macs is in fact much weaker than that of the Wintel platforms.

So, with that, I'll congratulate Ari on his Gateway purchase, will hope he purchased the service plan, and leave everyone to believe that their techology prejudices are the best ones!!

Re: I need a new computer

I will say this - being an artist/graphics/web/video kinda PC user, I am so sick of MAC snobbery when it comes to those apps. SHEEEESH, you'd think without a MAC you couldn't paint by number. Seriously, if anyone has had to deal with a print house (they are all MAC, grudgingly PC), you'd swear your PC generated copy was carrying the plague.....makes me ill

PS - it also makes me ill when the drives in my POS Dell crash, total loss - TWICE!! because MS sells an OS that's as stable as a dink in a hurricane......whattayagonnado?

Humbug!

BTW, the ad when PC man keels over with a virus saying "I think I'm gonna crash", that is comedy!

I'll bet even Bill Gates laughs at the Mac ads. To most (but not all :-) they're smart, funny and entertaining.

Because PC's have always dominated market share the Mac/PC war has always been underdog David trying to slay big dog Goliath. If they can't be the big dog they'll say we're smarter, quicker, better looking and more fun than the big dog. Some of it is true and some of it is marketing... You play the hand you're dealt.

The differences between the two systems may be diminishing with the new Mac OS and Intel dual processors but the place where Mac's really seem to shine is their interactive consumer friendly music, still photo and video software. I suspect they make it much easier for people with no computer or media background to be creative without having to understand computers. I could be wrong as I know there is much more pc software out there for every kind of need but since I've never used a pc I have no frame of reference. I've never heard anyone suggest there was something comparable to the iLife software but my frame of reference is admittedly small.

Not sure where the Mac app. snobbery Doug refers to is coming from these days as I don't cross paths with it much anymore. In fact I've read more Mac bashing by PC users in the past year than Mac elitism but then I don't get around that much either.

There will always be the true believers who swear their side is superior and I've loved Macs from the start but of all the things on this planet worthy of being upset about... The Mac/PC argument is very low on my list.

I agree completely. There's nothing like a good C++ GUI programming platform, is there?

Re: I need a new computer

I'd love to share my expertise on this subject, but I just upgraded office 2003 to office 2007 on my XP desktop and I'm busy affixing Bill Gates' picture to my dartboard.

This is gonna feel soooo good when I stop.

Re: I need a new computer

I say buy a Mac. No games, but they have PS3 and/or X-Box (if you still crave Microsoft) for that.

I have a friend who go the Alienware, some new hot shit model, and he thinks it's quite good.

As far as some of those older ones, like GP Legends, good luck finding them, though I still have my copy.
