finally got in Skip Barber!

3-day in Atlanta, Nov. 1-3 in the formula cars for my son!
been trying for over a year to get him approved, and he's finally in
had to wait until he turned 12, and he couldn't be more excited today!
any advise, we'd love to have. he's all over the Going Faster book, and has the SB cars and Road Atlanta in his Rfactor sim.

Re: finally got in Skip Barber!

Here's a link Sy made a while ago with some great choices in addition to "Going Faster". Ross Bently has a series of books and "Inner Speed Secrets" (The 2nd book on the Amazon list) is one of the best of his series in terms of a mental and physical approach to racing.

Re: finally got in Skip Barber!

rFactor is pretty good, but if he's into the sims, iRacing is worth a close look. The guys there have a good relationship with Skip Barber and have done a real nice job modeling the Skip Barber formula car.

I'm sure he'll have a great time. Good luck to you both.

Re: finally got in Skip Barber!

i have a question. i know SB supplies everything (gear), but we're still bringing his own stuff so he'll be comfortable (and it all fits his small body). he has a GTX helmet, hans, etc.
for a suit, what is the requirement (SFI) rating and layers and does it have to be nomex?
and do the gloves and shoes have to have a rating requirement?
he has all his karting stuff, and the stuff for his INEX racing. his INEX stuff is fire-rated, but not a lot, like i think only 1 layer.
for the school, could he just wear his karting gear? it's the most comfortable for him.

Re: finally got in Skip Barber!

The quickest answer to your questions should come from your SBRS customer service representative. (The person who signed you up for your 3-day school) He or she can get definitive answers. Your stuff may be OK but I'm not exactly sure what their requirements are so don't want to speculate.

Re: finally got in Skip Barber!

got our seat poured the other day, getting close! i've gotten to hang out with john andretti some at the track this year as both our boys race karts, and he told me this past weekend that angus is ready for the next level (which made me feel good about starting with the cars). told him that we were just about to start SB, and he praised the program and told me how he went through it. seems like everyone starts off with skip barber!

Re: finally got in Skip Barber!

Now there's a "Happy Boy!"
You'll soon learn how meaningful that phrase is when used by Nick Nicholson from race control.
Good stuff!

Re: finally got in Skip Barber!

Congrats on your 3 day - we can all pretty much guarantee that you and you son will have a valuable and enjoyable experience at Atlanta - you son will gain very important racing skills with the SBRS RT - the car truly bridges the gap between karting and full-blown open wheel racing. The two most important aspects of the 3 day (especially for karters moving up to formula cars) is 1. work on mastering the basics of the operation of the gear box, braking and heal/toe work and 2. listen to the feedback from the instructors - they have coached some of the worlds best - they know what they are talking about. Have fun - its the best time you can have in a race car!!!

Re: finally got in Skip Barber!

Angus had 3 of the best days of his life! i can't tell you how much fun i had just sitting back and watching his complete enjoyment of every minute. the instructors were great! keith watts, glenn, chris wehrheim were all incredible to angus and he learned so much.
we're having to take a couple months away from SB to run the florida winter tour, but will be back for our 2 day in sebring in february, then hopefully racing back in sebring in april.
the journey begins

Thanks for the great report Richie. Nothing but smiles here... As you so aptly say... The journey begins. How lucky Angus is to have your unwavering support.

Re: finally got in Skip Barber!

Been swamped with karting, but now looking forward to Monday and starting the 2 day! Bonus in that one of Angus' Ocala Gran Prix teammates will be taking the class with him. Will be even more fun as the 2 kids enjoy it together and maybe run some laps together

Re: finally got in Skip Barber!

There are multiple locations around the country. Go to their website and click on programs and locations and many of your questions will be answered. Call their toll free number and speak with a customer service rep if you have more detailed questions. Of course we're here to answer questions as well... but the website should help you a lot.

Re: finally got in Skip Barber!

The summer schedule has two race weekends left. One at Autobahn this weekend and one at Lime Rock Park October 7th and 8th.
The winter schedule is still being finalized and should be out soon.
All of the races are in the United States. They are considering going back to Mont Tremblant in Canada but that would be the only possible non-US race.
You should call toll free 866-932-1949 for more detail.
