After a while I posted a few questions and worked into it at a level I was OK with.

I think a lot of people might feel intimidated to post right away, but as they get more comfortable with "this place" they will begin to participate.

Let others get used to the site, the posts and the characters here and you will end up with more regular posters.

Just my 2 pennies.
I know I'm pulling up an old quote, but I agree with CDH. I know when I started comming to the site, I just wanted to look around for awhile and find out what was going on. Then when something interested me enough, and I started to get a bit of an idea concerning how everyone interacted, I joined in!

The lowest level car should be a pinto!

sydude doesn't want to break 999 posts (he said he likes the sound of that number), so he asked me to to tell you that if you want to use repeating icons (1 star, 2 stars, etc..) then you should use something around 50x50. But if you want to use an icon that gets replaced at every level (for example a pinto to a R/T to an F1 car) then it should be bigger and rectangular, maybe 120x60.

bless you, my children.

Re: New User Titles - Please Read (Threads Merged)

I finally had some time to do a couple of them in varying formats. Please take a look and let me know what you guys think about them. Try to find them in use in actual posts. Here are the ones I've done so far:

Re: New User Titles - Please Read (Threads Merged)

What is this obession with how frequently someone speaks up, versus whether they have anything useful to say? Sy . . . . you are betraying your "Neew Yawker" roots!!

Seriously, some of us "lurkers" lack the gift for repartee of a cdh or MJAmock. Encourging us to post more might induce such serious boredom that interest AND participation in the forum would go down, not up.

Indeed, to guard against such an outcome, I propose a secondary rating system to supplement the quantity based rankings. Under this system, forum members with an unfortunate tendency to create postings that put other forum members in a persistent vegitative state would be placed in the category "Accidental Drone." These users would have to demonstrate that they had cleaned up their act by posting a mimimum of 3 consectutive, certifiably witty posts, without further incident, or they would be put in the "OFB" category (Other Forums Beckon).

As an aside, any forum member who reaches 2000+ should receive the title "certified motorhead motormouth." A photo of Sid Brenner would serve as a good icon to accompany this title.

Re: New User Titles - Please Read (Threads Merged)

PT... good idea! I have a few candidates already! Maybe users could 'vote' for crappy posters. Kinda like the Gong Show... too many votes and you get some sort of penalty!

Sy... what is the status of the icons? Some have them (like me), some don't (like you). Have you made a determination what you will use? Can individual users change or delete them?

I'm still messing around with the icons, trying to see which formats they look best in, which fonts, etc.. I haven't had the time to do all of them at once, so I've done them sporadically. I'm open to suggestions on them, including the idea that we bag the icons all together and go back to the text ones. Users can't selectively choose to have them shown, either - it's either on or off for everyone.

In regards to Peter's idea about voting for crappy (or good) posters, yes, this can be done but it's unstable and evidently causes lots of friction between members. So a no go there.

My graphical consigliere has advised me to toss the icons, so off they go. We're back to the old titles.

A non-sequitor but "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" is right up there too! Steve Martin, Michael Caine, directed by Frank Oz. Martin's Ruprecht portrayal is worth the rental price. Lots of great casting for the smaller rolls and shot on the southern coast of France.
