Re: Daytona Ferrari On-Board
That was one hell of a fast GT350, keeping up with the Daytona in that Sebring video
Some of those downshifts in the Can-Am @ Laguna did scare me a bit though

Re: Daytona Ferrari On-Board
Interesting that Jim never uses the clutch pedal in the Jag going up or down the gears at Sebring. Is that a special tranny or are those boxes particularly friendly to that technique?

Re: Daytona Ferrari On-Board
square cut gears also called straight cut gears. makes shifting easier but brings a noticeable whine. don't need to use the clutch. 'round here at the circle track they call 'em dog boxes.

Copy that... Dog boxing it on an un-cirlce track. A thing of beauty.

Re: Daytona Ferrari On-Board
Pat,
A Non synchro box will shift w/o the clutch beautifully when the revs are matched (the essence of Double Clutching). Most "race cars" prior to the sequential generation have non synchro boxes (except Porsche). We used to teach this before the sequential Skippy car was introduced. Picture Sweet Lips trolling up & down the front straight with his left leg up & out of a formula car cockpit rowing his way through the gears...blipping his way into the minds of countless students! A thing of beauty in a very strange way.
Most downshifting shifting errors are incorrect use of the clutch. Not using the clutch prevents its misuse. "Blip it and stick it!"
Up shifting w/o minimizes clutch slip since it is always completely engaged.
This classic Jaguar coupe falls into that fun category of cars and seems appropriate at historic Sebring.

Re: Daytona Ferrari On-Board
One thing that stood out to me was the shifting. Very precise movements. I noticed you depending on the shift the hand position on the shift knob would change versus us who just always put it on top of the knob in the same position. I assume there is a specific pattern to this to be learned?

Re: Daytona Ferrari On-Board
Gimme the Daytona anyday. No programable ECU. No sequential anything. Just double pumping your way through the gears and waving as you pass much younger machinery. Be nice if 4th? gear was actually inside the car but what the heck, it's a Ferrari. Nice drive, Jim.

Re: Daytona Ferrari On-Board
Here is the owner, Mr Tuma in the Ferrari at Laguna during the histories. Chases a 427 around. I really want a 427, or a 289. With the ferrari you have to remember that first is down, and 4th is forward. I should have the 24hr footage done soon, love to see some from the winner

When shifting any box without the clutch you never want to FORCE the shifter anywhere.. You guide it, and when the revs are matched right it will basically "fall" into the next gear. Probally why JP has a different "grip" on the shifter for different gears.. Just "nudging" it to the the next gear.... Really, this should apply for almost any box, even WITH a clutch being used...NO box likes to be "manhandles' and forced....Guide it.. It'll just fall into the next gear if your footwork is good. Whats that about holding like a bird????

Re: Daytona Ferrari On-Board
BMW had lots of "sporty" gearboxes before, similar to the this one too, with the 4th "outside the car" (this expression made me laugh )... They were all synched though
I personnally rarely use the clutch on downshifts either in my car for daily use... But when on my local track, I use it as I'm just less confident doing it at higher RPM...
Always wanted to try a non-synched gearbox, but even my father's Alpine A110's gearbox is synched so...
