Years ago my brother was in an induced coma and nurses told us some people in that state remembered being spoken to, so I'd go in and tell him about my day and what was going on with the family and in the news. It was weird but also comforting. You speak to the spirit of the person you're with, trusting that your presence is being perceived on some level that you have no way of evaluating. Watched the entire academy awards with him which was bizarre and surreal. They brought him out of it a few days later and he made a full recovery with no conscious memory of my time with him.
When I read Massa's reporting of being with Schumacher it sounded abstractly similar.
