Re: 2011 SCCA Runoffs Live

Apparently Speedcast feed died for many during FC race. I lost my whole service from L3 'til the cool down. Have to wait for the replay in a few weeks, DAMN! But good coverage of the runoffs otherwise.

What is the difference between the FE and FC and other F series?

Re: 2011 SCCA Runoffs Live

You have asked a great question, as before I wrote a long reply, I was looking on the SCCA web site and they don't have a simple guide to formula classes - looks like I need to submit a request!

Basically FE (Enterprise) is a spec car, FC (Continental) is the old FF2000, both tube frame cars.

FA (Atlantic) is a monocoque chassis car and the fastest class.

FF (was Ford but now includes Honda (Fit)) is tube frame open wheel NO wings.

FV tube frame using VW (old) Beetle suspension and engine tranny parts

F5 is hard to describe without insulting anyone. You could say it is an overgrown go kart, but with the HP and sophisticated chassis/suspension, they are faster in some places than FF. They are trying a new class with a 600 cc motorcycle engine and sequential shifter - that could be interesting - like a really big shifter kart

Other classes

FB - Like FC but with 1000cc motorcycle engine - your mini F1 machine

FM - the old Mazda spec school cars which have lasted longer that I would have though.

details at:

start at page 80 in the PDF

FC 2:11
FE 2:13
FM 2:15
FF 2:20
F5 2:23
FV 2:41

Thanks, everybody! It was a great race. I put all of my Skippy drafting skills to good use, and despite a broken rear sway bar, was able to prevail!

Sports Racers are great. Came in late so couldn't tell what battle I was watching, but it was fun. Understand these guys spend BIG BUCKS on their cars, carbon springs on a few!!!!!!
And sorry I forgot to say congrats Revere. All I hear is it was a helluva good race. Can't wait for the replay.

Re: 2011 SCCA Runoffs Live

Congrats Revere! The untold story was in final Qualifying where P1 Revere and ArmsUp teammate P2 Jerry towed/drafted P3 Brian Tomasi to the POLE as the session was black flagged. WHOOPS. Anxiously the clock ticked as Revere waited at Pit Out for another chance. "Stay FOCUSED!" Green again with minutes to spare and running without a drafting partner. Revere's First Flying Lap was a track record 2:10.9!!!! Back on the point as the checker flew. Talk about doing it the hard way!!! One lap qualifying...Proud of that guy!
Lots of great racing at RA with good friends...such an awesome circuit. Elkhart Lake is terrific. Miss those we don't see there anymore for sure. Congrats to Gregg Borland for such an outstanding effort.

Re: 2011 SCCA Runoffs Live

Thanks for the first-person report, Jim. Makes me feel like I was there. Have really missed seeing you, you were one of the most important factors in me becoming a decent driver, and I remain grateful for that. Hope you are well.

Now Revere, get off your a-- and post a first-person, "There I Was" report from inside the cockpit. "I was able to prevail" doesn't cut it by a long shot.

Re: 2011 SCCA Runoffs Live

Harsha,

To be honest -- and no self-respecting racing driver should admit this -- the race is kind of a blur. I was pretty focused the entire time and my concentration then interferes with my memory now. I can recall a few snapshots though:

1) Getting passed by my teammate, Jerry, into Turn 1 on Lap 4.
2) Falling back to third and not being happy about it.
3) Seeing my teammate drop a few wheels at the exit of Turn 3 on Lap 5.
4) Sensing the car wasn't handling well -- especially in Turn 1 and the Carousel. That was due to the broken sway bar.
5) Passing for the lead in Turn 12 on lap 6 and going to first gear to get a good drive up the hill to 13.
6) Being told there was only one lap to go and thinking, "I can do this."
7) Coming upon lapped traffic in Turn 12 on the final lap, trying to figure out a way to get by in 13, and driving defensively in 14 to protect my position up the front straight.
8) Being very, very careful (at JP's urging) with my final upshift of the race, and completing it, knowing I had won.

That's about all I can say. It was an intense, pressure-filled week.

For those who didn't catch it, here's a link to the video of the race:

Enjoy.

Re: 2011 SCCA Runoffs Live

Also need to give a shout-out to Rick Balsly for finishing P5 and improving his best lap by something like 2 seconds. And to Gregg Borland for putting together a team that could win the National Championship!

When will the Runoffs be broadcast?

Do you mean on TV or the Internet? You can see most (if not all) of the races at speedcasttv.com. There's a lot of good racing.
