Wow indeed... Scary stuff.

Murphy's law... The first time Speed Channel cuts away from F1 early for soccer coverage this happens. Thankfully it looks like no one was seriously injured but I'll bet new pit rules governing flammable liquids have already been E-mailed to teams.

Yeah, go figure. It was a FOX broadcast (SPEED's parent company I believe). Bad enough when they broadcast F1 on FOX, but soccer on SPEED ?

Re: Spanish GP Pit Fire

Exactly!... My reaction as well. They cut short the after race interviews and podium to go to live soccer coverage. They've never done that for anything else and this was their first foray into soccer.

Their F1 coverage is one of the few things left on Speed worth watching. Given the way Fox has devalued and de-evolved quality racing coverage since purchasing the channel, this disappoints more than surprises. Velocity has picked up a lot of the interesting automotive programming Speed used to have but even Velocity covers poker and other non-automotive programing so it is what it is.

Re: Spanish GP Pit Fire

Watching the vids from BBC and Sky on YT, I was shocked at the slow response of the circuit-provided firefighting squad. The entire blaze was fought by mechanics with no protective gear and largely with handheld extinguishers. Many ended up needing medical care for smoke inhalation and it is lucky that no one was poisoned given how thick the smoke was. A larger blaze would have been catastrophic. The inadequacy of the response was not noted by any of the TV crews, but I found this article earlier today.

As for the bravery and training of the race crews, well the vids demonstrate that clearly.
