Interesting contrast in facial expressions and body language between husband and wife in both videos-- complete calm and control, even bemusement, on the one hand, and as far to the other end of the spectrum as one could possibly imagine on the other. I guess it's more evidence that, even in racing, opposites attract.

First, it's astonishing that no one snugged the shoulder harness tight enough to hold her properly in place and second, it's a pity that she appears to lose the use of both arms to try and hold herself up and back in the seat when the high G-loads kick in. Magically her hands and arms work fine when she gives enthusiastic thumbs up both before and after her cockpit thrashing. You wonder what was going through her mind?

Absolutely on both, the face plants are funny as hell, vid a good illustration of the G's, cool.
WTH were they thinking is right, ridiculous to be that loose. Were they doing it for the vid???

All I can say, without a hint of cultural prejudice, having lived a significant portion of my life East and South of Northern European-derived safety culture, is that life is in general so dangerous that there is an unconscious cultural assumption that most safety instructions are merely good-natured paternalistic suggestions. (Remember the Mumbai Commuter Train Sliders? ) This being an "Experience", the guys running the show are probably minimally professional "get-em-in-get-em-out" types while the owner relaxes on his kart-track equipped yacht. As to DD's comment regarding the loss of all upper body function, this particular Darwin Award candidate seems pretty much a sheeple. After the first face-plant, most folks would have tried to figure something out.

I suspect Burt was happy to let Mrs. Joao keep it as a memento of the experience.

Those belts were beyond loose. Once they parked, she had her left shoulder and arm out before she ever unbuckled the harness. And to think they're all about safety at YAS:

I read in another blog the most likely answer...those belts were snugged as tight as they could be. Watching again I agree. So either she should not have been allowed in the car, or they need to mod their equipment....or as you say, they don't give a f***, proceed at your own risk. She would have been ejected like a rocket had this gone really wrong.
Harsha, what do you know about civil law suits in Abu Dhabi and the UAE? Has our overly litigious, I'm a victim when I stub my toe mentality not hit over there yet? Could this even be a problem in the land of Sheiks?
Great thread - I plan to hvae my much better half drive our Formula Mazda during a track day at Mosport this summer - the result should be interesting .................... I may lose my ride.
