Not exactly today's safety standards

OK, the usual - who, what where, when, etc etc.

Harsha, you aren't supposed to search it right away - let people try and figure it out first, geeeez

Re: New Photo Quiz for '11

Besides the remarkable Gerardo look alike, the hat, hay bale and obvious age of this Sebring shot... (Perhaps 50's or 60's?) The amazing thing is even though this shot is many decades old the concrete looks just as weathered and cracked as it does today. How'd they do that?

A-mur-ee-ka - BEER - FOOD. Looks really flat - no horizon. Sebring sounds right. Looks like a very blurry NART livery on the side. Looks like wire wheels? I guess 1962, Ferrari, Stirling Moss.

LOL!!!! Harsha, thanks for pointing out what I did after burning that car to the ground. It feels like ages ago, so this photo could indeed be accurate.

Sebring
1962
Ferrari
Moss
yup

What Sebring event (duh), who is Moss co driver, what Ferrari model and who is sitting on the bale?

What happened to them in the early stages of the race?

Innes Ireland for one, I think. 250TR. Bobo. Alfalfa.

Disqualified for some sort of refueling infraction.

But seriously - hay bale driver looks like Prince Bira to me.

Re: New Photo Quiz for '11

Here is a comment on the pic:

The #26 car driven by Stirling Moss & Innes Ireland was indeed disqualified for refueling before the requisite 20 laps between refueling had been reached. Shortly after 2PM Ireland pitted to have new brake pads fitted. An enthusiastic 'plombeur', obviously thinking that the car was also in for fuel, broke the filler cap seals. One of the N.A.R.T. mechanics saw the cap had been removed and put in 10 gallons of fuel. However, only 18 laps had been recorded. They were leading the race at the time having overtaken the Rodriguez brothers when they pitted.

Information sourced from "Automobile Year 10 1962-1963" - yes that is Olivier Gendebien on the bale - he co-drove Ferrari #24 with Phil Hill and finished second behind the Bianchi/Bonnier Ferrari #23

Re: New Photo Quiz for '11

Gendebien in a less than stellar moment - info on this pic in French - here is the google "translation"

the Ferrari 250 TR 58 driven by Red Devil Olivier Gendebien just stamping the bottom of the list.
While Archie Scott-Brown was forced to retire, Olivier Gendebien will rank in the company of Luigi Musso, an unexpected second place.

oui

is that a Birdcage he's mounting? A Cunningham?

Re: New Photo Quiz for '11

then search Robert Bo Cheadle and find this

Robert "Bo" Cheadle
1942-1999

Robert "Bo" Cheadle, MBA '71, died October 21, 1999, following a heart attack while racing vintage sports cars. Cheadle, 57, a Pleasanton resident, was a well-known by Marshall faculty and alumni. A Senior Managing Director and Senior Retail Analyst at Montgomery Securities in San Francisco, he was named by the Wall Street Journal as the top retail analyst in the country in 1995. Cheadle took early retirement in June of 1998. During his tenure at Montgomery, he also recruited many Marshall students, all of whom remember him fondly for his mentoring skills. He also directed more than a few of the younger people at Montgomery back to USC for an MBA.

For the last ten years, Cheadle welcomed the students in the Marshall Student Investment Fund to Montgomery Securities and to San Francisco. He was also a generous donor to the Marshall School and especially to the Guilford C. Babcock Endowment Fund which is part of some $3 million now managed by the Marshall students. In short, after graduation, Cheadle remained active in four important areas of alumni activity: career services, student recruitment, philanthropy and alumni events in the Bay Area.

Racing and collecting vintage racecars was an avocation to which Cheadle devoted much of his time, both before and after his retirement. His enthusiasm motivated much of Montgomery's interest in the motor sports industry. At the time of his death, he was also serving as a consultant to three motor sports companies and was a Founding Director of CornerHardware.com and a Director of Silicon Entertainment.

Born March 15, 1942, in Pasadena, CA, Cheadle was raised in Montana. He completed undergraduate work at San Jose State University and entered the Marshall School MBA program following military service.

He is survived by his wife, Linda; his daughter, Shari Wiemer of Los Angeles; sons Chad Cheadle of Pleasanton, Marshall Williams of Kings Beach and Mark Williams of Concord; his mother, brother and three grandchildren. Memorial services were held November 6 at the Blackhawk Auto Museum with Professor Babcock, Senior Associate Dean John Crowe and dozens of alumni in attendance. (Sp. '00)

Re: New Photo Quiz for '11

Nice story, Doug. Sounds like a very cool guy. Franz, did you know him?

While his collection is not exclusively Ford, you can tell from the vid that the blue oval was his first love. Story about the first car that you see in the vid:
