Re: Daily Quiz

VERY cool! Maserati? Mid-to-late 1930's? Not Indy. Mille Miglia maybe?

Re: Daily Quiz

I thought Alfa / Tazio, but it isn't. I looked it up, the marque we've heard of, but I did not know this driver, interesting chap (car and driver both Italian). He was always smoking a pipe, all the time, look closely at Rob's pic and you'll see he's racing and smoking a pipe (making that pic even more awesome, haha), same as this pic...LOL

Re: Daily Quiz

A really cool shot, Rob. The easy drift with eyes left and the pipe in his mouth is pure racing elegance. "Limit? What limit?"

I didn't know who it was either (like cdh guessed Tazio), but Google has made it too easy to search images now. Just drag and drop.
The fact that the car was used as a spec racer in junior formulae fits right in here.

Very cool. Don't know who, but any chance that's a cigarette hanging out of his mouth? That would make him either Southern or French.

Re: Daily Quiz

Def a pipe smoker, most pics show him with his pipe. I thought Hawthorne racing with his ever-present bow tie was interesting, but racing with a pipe tops that, what an era.

Well hell, I didn't know you could Google an image until you two blabbed...

The Belond Maserati was familiar to me because it sits in the IMS Hall of Fame museum, one of only a handful of cars to win the race twice. I try to get in there at least once or twice a year just to breathe the air...

This how I was introduced to opposite lock...

Re: Daily Quiz

Since Rosso posted such a beautiful Maserati, I thought I would post these pics I found of a concours grade '47 Cisi D46. Clearly a more simple racer than the Maser, but still a beautiful little car. The common genetics between the Italian racers of this era is obvious, takes an expert to tell them apart.

More detailed pics of cockpit, pedals, and all the fun stuff here:

And here's a little red coupe from the same family that's done pretty well for itself and wouldn't look half bad in front of the tree.

I'll chime in with what I believe is a '51 example of a Kurtis-Kraft Offy that place 2nd at Indy in '53 with Art Cross at the helm. It has just high and low gears that you have to reach through the steering wheel to shift. I took these pics a couple of years ago, but I saw the car a few weeks ago and is for sale last I heard. Suggested retail price $800,000. Redneck?

Oh yeah, what a sweetie that red baby is. Can you imagine a modern-built fleet of these and the fun we could have??
The KK Offy is also a beauty Peter. For the much smaller budget (and a steal imo given the quality and level of detailing), try the Exoto 1/18 Alfetta 195 M of the pipe-smoking Bonetto himself, spectacular!

and for the ultimate display, must buy the model chassis version as well, wow

Large view of display

Re: Daily Quiz

CDH, that is a stunning model!! Wow. And I love your idea of a dual display with the chassis model....agreed, a Christmas present worth its price. Something I very well might talk myself into one of these years....

Oh yeah. Now that would be a spec series worth doing.

(from http://www.ddavid.com/formula1/cisit46.htm)

The little monoposto was a splendid training car, and a most economical one. With its 55-56 bhp and 8 cwt. it had excellent acceleration, even though it did bounce about rather because of the limited spring travel. This characteristic did not please drivers used to heavier and faster cars, because being short in wheelbase as well as light, it demanded exceedingly quick reactions. But it was just the car for youngsters who wanted to break into racing - exactly like Formula Junior cars of today. Many great drivers raced Cisitalias. Dusio built a batch of thirty cars - ample for establishing one-class events, which he sometimes organized himself.

Does a lot to explain the pic Rob posted that got this thread started.

The rest of the backstory of the creation of the D46 is just as interesting. Turns out it was seminal to the renaissance of motor racing after WWII, and one of the first examples of the marriage of automotive, aeronautical, and academic expertise that is now the rule.

What looks like one of those early single-make events (what is that fendered car doing on the grid?? )

Re: Daily Quiz

And THIS is Tazio doing his Dom impression:
The Cisitalia's greatest claim to fame was actually brought about by a mechanical failure. The Cisitalia had a hinged steering wheel that moved out of the way to allow drivers more room to get in and out. Unfortunately during the Coppa Brezzi in the Valentino Park circuit Nuvolari's hinge had broke leaving him with the column and one spoke to drive with! Nuvolari besides himself frantically waved the steering wheel not wanting to have to pit but knowing he had no other choice. Because he actually drove a couple of laps without a working steering wheel he was given a heavy fine by the organizers only to be outweighed by the ecstasy to which he brought the crowd. Just as the Cooper and HVM had for England, Cisitalia helped to resurrect racing in Italy.
