Great NY to Paris Race of 1908

Had never heard of this before. An adventure as great as any explorer's expedition. But why would anyone start an around the world race with a leg across N. America in the dead of winter??? Followed by a leg in Alaska (which proved impossible to negotiate, no surprise)?

Great (meaning highly amusing) article in NYT on the "Prussian Lieutenant" who drove the Protos car. Anyone seen the recently made film?

Re: Great NY to Paris Race of 1908

The original, unrestored, winning car, the 1907 Thomas Flyer, was at one time owned by the late Bill Harrah and on display at his one of a kind (and now long gone) collection in Reno, Nevada. Amazing that it was left intact all those years. The whole race event was amazing.
A MANLY race, for sure !

Re: Great NY to Paris Race of 1908

They were going to recreate the race in 2008.
A friend of mine here, Jim Taylor had a car all ready to participate when the visas from China were cancelled. It seems the route was going to go through some troubled parts of Tibet and the Government was not going to let the outside world see the way they put down a revolution. So at the last minute.... the whole thing was cancelled at the last minute and Jim was out BIG bucks....... no refund.
My co owner of the Caterham was supposed to be a co-driver and he was disappointed as well. Although he was out a few less bucks.
