Western Who Wants to Learn to Drive a Sprint Car at RA?

Well, I've been itching for a while to get some roundy-round dirt-track seat time. (Why? Well may you ask.) Mike Kertscher, an ex-Skippy instructor who did my Car Control Clinic at RA is a sprint car star and got me thinking about it. He put me in touch with Randy Sippel who runs the Open Wheel driving school at Elkhart Lake. Randy is willing to do a "private" school for 3-5 drivers on Tuesday or Wednesday evening of next week, from 6-8 pm, in real live sprint cars. The school would be held at a track in Beaver Dam WI, about an hour and ten minutes from Elkhart Lake. Each driver would have his own car for the entire time, about 2 hours of seat time. Cost would be $500 per driver for the car and instruction, and an equal share of the $500 track rental for the evening (so if we got 4 drivers, that would be 500 + 125 = $625 each). He is not requiring a damage deposit but any damage would have to be paid for in full (a complete rollover could cost anywhere from $2500-5000 depending how heavy). The usual safety gear is required-- suit, helmet, boots, gloves, HANS, arm restraints (he can supply if you don't have). After the session, you're ready to race!

I think this would be a blast to do, and extremely instructive in terms of car control. Continuous powersliding for 2 hours.....Any takers? (I need to let him know an exact count, if any, by Saturday)

I can't go this short notice, but it would be something I would very much like to participate in at some point. I go to the dirt track races most friday nights here is KC. Looks like a blast always wanted to try it.

So, for $600, two hours in an alky sprint car, or 1 lap in the F1 Arrows? Am I sick - this sounds like more fun than the F-1 deal! If I lived anywhere near Wisconsin I'd sign up in a minute. These guys running with or without wings?

A good friend of mine - aged 54 - just retired from the Louisville fire department and went out and bought a dirt track street stock racer. Zero race experience, no driver's school - nothing. Pay the entry fee and wait till we call you for the first heat. I went out to watch his debut and he did OK. Brought the car back in one piece and didn't finish DFL. Looked like an absolute blast!

I think this is going to be way more fun per $ than the F1 deal. 550 hp, with wings (he said he could take them off if we wanted, which might not be a bad idea-- at this stage of the game they're probably like Skippy wings-- CD profit centers ).

It should be noted, for those of you who've let it creep up on them, that the dates in question are the front end of Skippy week at RA (which is why I set it up that way, nach'ly). Rosso, I've heard the racing is just as you describe, and you can actually win $75-100 for your trouble right out of the gate. (BTW, great new signature-- signed, Recovering Crayon Eater)

Re: Who Wants to Learn to Drive a Sprint Car at RA?

Of the many odd/different things about sprint cars, the lack of mirrors is the most jarring, very odd feeling (only sat in a sprint, chickened out when it came to doing hot laps, it was a while back, ok I'm honest at least ).

A very weird feeling looking for the rear-views and seeing dirt.....the sprint sessions would be great, sorry I am not racing at RA or I would be there, it will be an experience fer shur.

Awww, heck, you don't NEED mirrors on the dirt! The car's rotated sideways most of the time , just look to driver's left to see behind you! You'll be looking out the RIGHT side to see where you are going!

6-8pm in Beaver Dam, WI. You'll have to see how long it would take you to get there from wherever you're flying into. Might be cutting it too close, given the risk of flight delays.

Re: Who Wants to Learn to Drive a Sprint Car at RA?

Harsha,
As long as saftey is addressed (no reason to think otherwise and I know the parties invovled) you will have a BLAST! I raced dirt for a couple seasons while racing prototypes GTPs. Talk about a technological difference??? $15 entry fee to the track and run a car if you have one. It was way too much fun. My brother and I swapped weekends based on who was at home. So much fun!!! It will certainly teach you car control and how to search for visibilty (you'll learn that one on site).
Look where you want it to end up!

Looking forward to hearing about it.
JP

Re: Who Wants to Learn to Drive a Sprint Car at RA?

well, not much to report here--- the pics say it all. Too bad you can't see the mile-wide grin on my face. Mike Kertcher drove all the way out to Beaver Dam to coach me-- now that is a cool guy.

I will say this: Driving a sprint car is like riding a beast from another planet, like one of those George Lucas Star Wars animals. What were they called? TomToms?

hey JP ---- NO brake, ALL gas....550 big ones!

COWABUNGAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!

The "Goodyear" on the tail was a nice touch, but I'd bet most sprints still run on Hoosiers!

Nah, that's for them fancy folk and their "show" Tons. Mine's clearly the dirt-snorting, sand-eating breed.

Doug, that is one weird freaky-ass hilarious p-shop. I haven't said anything because frankly I'm, like, speechless. I look a hell of a lot more comfortable on that thing than I ever felt in the sprint car. Although, if memory serves, I am appropriately attired in orange as a fighter pilot of the Rebellion.

More stirrup, less rein, indeed.

Good eye, Stevie. But further review of my photos shows only the left front was a McCreary. All the rest G-year Eagles. As were those on the other cars. Which explains all the decals. And the hat.

BTW, Mike, I don't know if I'd go telling Randy that real sprint cars run Hoosiers. Nice guy, but about 6'2'', 250 and hands as big as my head. No problem unloading the hauler by himself.

Actually, one version looked like this......just couldn't get the orange right so I left it alone. Kills me that the toe in the stirrup is orange....that was not me, from orig pic.

Geez, I give! I now consider myself duly chastised! And to think I thought I was being clever just to have noticed the Goodyear tail-art! This is just like my driving - decision made before all of the pertinent info has been received!

Hey, the orange looks great, almost weatherbeaten-- shoulda left it. Especially with the Toe.
(Too much of a perfectionist? No, not you. Couldn't conceive of that.)

Exclamation Re: Who Wants to Learn to Drive a Sprint Car at RA?

OK sports fans,

Round Two of the Kettle Moraine Dirt Experience:

The sprint cars are going to be let loose again on Wed September 26 at 4:00 pm at Charter Raceway in Beaver Dam WI. This is the Wed lapping day of the Skippy Midwest finale at Road America. I plan to do a morning of Skippy lapping and then head downstate for more fun. I invite all Juicy drivers who have dreamt of riding a TonTon to join me-- it'll loosen up your joints for the rest of the week! So far, it's me and the Greists. Would appreciate anyone else who wants to join us to let me know within the next 2 weeks, so I can give Randy an exact head count so that he knows how many cars to haul down there and how much track time we need to rent. If enough of us sign up, we may have to do some car sharing, but trust me, you need a rest with these beasts. These are full-on 550hp winged sprints (yes, I'm going to run the wings this time), and the track is a well-maintained 1/3 mile banked clay oval that hosts Grand National and World of Outlaws events. (It used to have a first-class main building, but some kids burned it down this summer.) See the first post in the thread for other details, cost will be similar, will let everyone know an exact amount once the head count is in. I'm going to see if I can get Mike Kertcher to come down and coach us as well, and would want to pay him, too.

This is a learning session and these cars are a handful, so there will be only one car on the track at a time, and no "racing" as such, but maybe we can end the day with some time trials to make it interesting. And yes, all Skippy instructors are welcome. Somebody who knows how to get in touch with NickNick please send me his contact info. He wanted in on this.

Awesome! Consider yourself duly registered. It's gonna be mucho fun! I'll get back to you with more details in a couple of weeks.

I did talk to NickNick (he is here at mid-O) and he is wussing out, shall we say. Something about "not fitting in with his travel schedule." I've already called him indelicate names to his face, but feel free to apply more "encouragement" from your end.

UPDATE 9/6

Just spoke to Randy Sippel today, as I wanted to get clear how things were going to run since it looks like we may have 8 folks joining the party whereas we only had 3 the time I went out before. People have been asking me questions about actual seat time and equipment. Here's the scoop:

Randy will guarantee 3 sessions, 7 laps each = 21 laps for each person. This is a minimum. When I did it, I think I got 6 sessions since there were only 3 of us. He will try to give us as many laps as he can, but he can only run till dark, which is about 7-7:30 pm these days. The earlier we start the more laps we can get. So, in the interest of maximum seat time, Randy is going to be set up and ready to go by 3 pm in Beaver Dam. Those who can make it by then can go ahead and jump in the cars and get going, those who can't can show up whenever they can, and they will be worked in. Randy feels that the easiest way to go about it is to get in the car, run your 3 sessions, and then get out, and then if there is time and room for more (which I am certain there will be), jump back in. That way everyone at least gets their minimum. We can even split up into folks who want to be there at 3pm and those who want to come at 4 or 4:30 and save some waiting time if that's an issue. Within reason, since this is a "private" school, we have flexibility in how we want to do it.

Regardless of how it runs, the cost will be $600 per person, total, everything inclusive, including track rental (which was extra last time). Randy is going to call and negotiate this as soon as he gets a definite number of drivers from me.

Drivers need to bring all their own driving gear-- he will have neck collars and arm restraints if you don't have.

As with any motorsports event, all drivers will be required to sign a waiver.

You will be responsible for ALL damage to your car. Whoever is driving the car at the time of the incident will be responsible. See first post for estimates. Only one car on the track at a time.

Payment by cash, check, or credit card on the day of the event.

Rain will cancel the event.

If you are interested in Randy supplying sandwiches, chips et al he can do that for whatever it costs him. I say we bring our own or go out for pizza later.

It takes 1 hour 15 min to drive from Elkhart Lake to Beaver Dam. I may ride with Randy in his toterhome, or I may drive down myself in time to be there by 2:45 or so--haven't quite decided yet. If I drive, I WILL be a DESIGNATED DRIVER for those like Craig who want to be intoxicated.

All those who want in please send me a Private Message letting me know that you are definite as soon as possible. I will assume that anyone I do not hear from is NOT going to run.

You can contact me by cell at 859.321.0268

Re: Who Wants to Learn to Drive a Sprint Car at RA?

Here is the list of people who have confirmed with me for the sprint car school on Wed Sept 26, 3:00 pm, in Beaver Dam WI:

John Greist
Revere Greist
Doppler Dave
Zach Ply
Rob Slonaker

If you are not on this list and were hoping to be there, YOU MUST LET ME KNOW ASAP OR THERE WILL NOT BE A CAR FOR YOU.

John and Revere will be coming up from Madison. I plan to be at the track by 2:45, which means leaving Elkhart Lake around 1:30. No need for all of us to drive separately, so get in touch with me between now and then if you want to carpool/caravan. I WILL be Skippy lapping that morning at RA.

Any rain more than a light-to-moderate sprinkle will cancel the show.

Again, cost will be $600 each, plus $50 each to be collected by me to pay our instructor, Mike Kertcher for his time and expense. For those who don't know Mike, he is a local sprint car hero, World of Outlaws competitor, ex-Skippy instructor (did my Car Control Clinics), and now runs the corporate program at RA as his day job. Rob and Doppler Dave, as fellow instructors, I am exempting you from this tax. There are a few perks in life.

Looking forward to going sideways like a bullet.

Revere and I will also arrive by 2:45 PM.

Looking forward to going sideways, though we'll leave the bullet speed for Harsha whose lifetime experience on the dirt qualifies him for such excess.

Re: Who Wants to Learn to Drive a Sprint Car at RA?

Well, a dirt track jamboree was held last week in Beaver Dam WI, and everyone who was anyone was there. John and Revere Greist, Doppler Dave, Zach Ply, Rob Slonaker, and I had an absolute blast in the cars, and from the looks on Marc Abernethy's and MHP's faces, it was almost as much fun to watch. Dr. G and DD ran a close race for the Most Exciting award, but I believe that there was mutual agreement that the Good Doctor took it pretty much hands down with his go-for-broke style. You could tell how much fun he was having! As soon as he turned in he was sideways again! And wall? What wall???

Unfortunately, absentminded as I am, I left my camera behind, but there was plenty of still and short video taken by MHP (using Rob's camera?) and Abernethy. Please guys, post 'em!

Here are a few shots from my lapping day in Dallas, showing track preparation with the water truck and then "packing it down" in the local late models! Until next year, then...

Re: Who Wants to Learn to Drive a Sprint Car at RA?

And a truly fine time was had by all . Revere and I want to do it again and see if we can get two cars - maybe even 4 - on the track at one time .

Many thanks to Harsha for setting it up and to Keith Watts and JP for encouraging us to try. 550 hp, 1600 lbs, sideways, sure ain't Skippy stuff, but amazing how Skippy training transfers.

Here are two of my pic's and a little video. I think MHP has some better shots.
Full throttle was almost an abstract idea. Worth doing and I will do again sometime in the future.

Wow, that looks like it was a TON of fun. Count me in next time for sure. I'm a newby to this whole "Juicy" thing, so I was unawares. I guess it's the price of not being juicy at the right time. Frustrated again.

Re: Who Wants to Learn to Drive a Sprint Car at RA?

History Lesson. Years ago, Mike Rand was the Skippy Coordinator at Road America. A very cool guy. He once had a Sprint Car that he bought and kept it in the Skip Barber Garages. Not the new one, the old ones that border on Hwy 67. Mike did a few laps around Road America in that Machine. He said that the main problem was the car is designed to turn left, not right. So the Carousel, the Kink, etc. were a treat to drive.

You guys looked like you were having a blast.

With the stagger we had, it was hard to turn right to get off the track. I bet Mike was quick through 5, 6 and 8 .
