Re: Close call, version 10.23.5.1

17. You are on a snowy two-lane rural highway following a truck traveling more slowly than you would like. There are narrow shoulders and guard rails on both sides. You are confident of your driving skills even under these slick conditions and would like to keep making good time, so you have attempted to pass, but oncoming traffic has been steady with no safe gap. While behind the truck, you have no visibility of the road beyond.

The truck's brake lights come on suddenly, and it slows and begins to move toward the shoulder. You should:

a. Tap your own brakes to make sure the pads are well-seated.
b. Get off your iPad even though you are in the middle of an important Facebook post.
c. Immediately consult your GPS with live traffic function to see if there is a less heavily-traveled route available.
d. Smoothly accelerate into the left lane in order to avoid any abrupt change in your own momentum while being able to pass on the left and keep making good time.
e. All of the above

18. Which answer to question 17 would you choose had you actually noticed that the truck ahead had, in fact, applied the brakes?

19. You are driving an 18-wheeler and approaching a snowplow that seems to be moving a tad slower than you are. In addition, there is an 18-wheeler in the oncoming lane. You have no clue about your own ability to maintain control under these circumstances, but you trust everyone else on the highway to be able to manage for themselves. At the critical moment, you:

A. Swerve slightly to the left and breathe when the oncoming 18-wheeler notices your stupidity and moves over.
B. Stop breathing again when you notice a smaller vehicle impeding your use of his lane.
C. Think it really was a good idea to change the rear tires recently and put on ones with better tread.
D. Wonder why the eyes of everyone in the approaching vehicles are as big as a full moon.
E. Wish your brother was there to witness this spectacle, because you will never give a convincing description of your driving prowess.

Sounds some relative of Russian/Slavic to me. Luckily for the videographer the semi driver (after making all the "great" decisions to which WTN attests) knew to keep his foot in it. And had grip to the drive wheels.

Re: Close call, version 10.23.5.1

So the cowboy in the sliding tractor trailer combo is the king of low eyes here. If you watch closely, he actually hits the parked snowplow, making it move forward a little, and the big slide we see is the second reaction to that swerve to avoid the parked snowplow.
Greg, there is no skill whatsoever involved on the tractor trailer drivers part, that is all luck and a sturdy guardrail helping to keep him straight and not completely jack-knifing into the oncoming traffic.
I hope the guys in the video car went and bought lottery tickets...

Re: Close call, version 10.23.5.1

Had a similar incident eastbound on the Mass Pike in a blizzard once. Please refer all questions to the operator of the MA DPW snowplow (the really big one) and the SOB who was operating the wing plow. Bet he never does that again.

Good eyes there Rob. (Probably why you are the instructor and we are the "unwashed.") Wow. This could have been WAY uglier than it could have been.

And now that I've put you in the mood for philosophical speculation on causality (I HAVE, haven't I?), let's take on the logic that "They should go out and buy lottery tickets." (There should be a show called Logical Mythbusters-- much less risky since there are no real cannonballs.) So, the lottery folks tell me that the odds of winning are like one in 81 million or billion or some such constantly shrinking number (thanks to our kindly inflating Reserve Bank and Congressional appropriation mechanisms). Which are probably similar to the odds of our Ukranian friends making it past that box truck-semi trailer-snowplow incident with nothing more than the sudden new smelly squishiness they've got in their shorts. Given the combined odds of BOTH getting past the swinging trailer without a scratch AND winning the lottery on the same day, it would seem to me that they would likely be better served by immediately lowering their speed to 35 mph, maintaining 8 car lengths from any other traffic, going directly home, and staying in bed for the next several years.
