Re: Star Mazda Today at Houston
I saw those times on the IMSA site... what are the odds of two cars turning the SAME lap time to the 1000th?! Wow!
How did they then decide who was 3rd and 4th? Must be by who did it first.
Go Bobo!

Re: Star Mazda Today at Houston
This doesn't look good boys.... Bobo started 4th... up to 3rd on the start. hen down to 12th! Must have spun.
Then an interminable yellow, which I figured would help clear his head and catch him up to the field.
Alas, a lap later, another yellow... and Bobo down to 34th! He must have been punted. DANG!!

He is now 35th and 5 laps down.
Do they get 'drops' in Mazda?

Re: Star Mazda Today at Houston
Track side report:
Bo Bo hit the wall and that was the end of his day. Matt Varsha's second top 5 finish should put him in 3rd maybe even 2nd overall. Mr. Herrington is now coasting in 1st with a healthy lead over 2nd overall.
Bo Bo, It happens buddy, it's early in the season so pleanty of time to kick some more ass out there!! You will overcome!!

Re: Star Mazda Today at Houston
I did hit the wall, and HARD too. Cracked the tub, gearbox, and most of the right side. It's a mess. It's my first major hit, and I don't want to do it again. What's interesting though, is that the car is so strong and so well appointed safetywise, nothing hurt at the time of the hit. Later, I got a bit of a headache, so I went to the hospital for a CT scan, but it all checked out okay.
Herrington was DQ'd for a part infraction at post tech. I can't imagine he's feeling well about it. Varsha is 3rd in points thanks to two P4's. I dropped to 6th, but its still very early in the season. All will be okay.
Thanks for your support guys. It will be a very difficult next few weeks, but as you say Peter, we will overcome.

Re: Star Mazda Today at Houston
The team has a spare I could use, but we have to appeal a penalty first. The Houston race had a single-race rule that if you caused a yellow during the race, you'd be suspended from the next race (Mid-Ohio). So, one dnf could become two if we lose the appeal. Stay tuned...

Re: Star Mazda Today at Houston
It was a tough race. My heart sank when I saw Bobo in the wall. Gerardo will come back. He always does and comes back stronger.
We struggled with car set-up and driver set-up all weekend. I finally got a handle on the driver(yours truly), but the car was way off and worse the faster I got.. bad weekend for Joey D and Rapheal Matos in Atlantics as well, as they both were punted in the back and lost track position big time. Rapha could have won. That's racing.
Varsha did great...Good job Matt!!
Good news: Mazda, Champ Car, Atlantics and Star Mazda have announced a partnership. Star Mazda is part of the Champ Car ladder system now.

That rule is AWFUL and shortsighted. It's bad enough that you had a DNF. That's penalty enough.

Re: Star Mazda Today at Houston
The rule is stupid and I told Gary(The guy that runs the series) that before the race. I asked him what are you going to do when a front runner causes a full course yellow. Tell him he can't race? No other series does this. The Atlantic race had as many or more full course yellows as we did. I agree they need to tighten up on bad driving, but in racing you want to race hard and things happen

Re: Star Mazda Today at Houston
Gerardo:
I have to tell you, it was torture watching the Timing & Scoring web site without any video or voice-over. I was clicking the "refresh" button like mad hoping you'd get rolling again, without any clue about what had happened. About lap 20, I realized it must have been a big off and figured Amok was right that you'd been punted.
That penalty rule is absurd. In the long run, it punishes most those who are most competitive and push hardest, which is what makes great racing. If their intention is to keep it safe, the SBRS "accident-prone driver" approach is much more sensible.
Anything we spectators can do to support your appeal? Write a letter? Send an email? Light a candle?

Re: Star Mazda Today at Houston
First and formost, you are ok dude... Big ones suck. bad news is the Yellow deal.
Thats a rediculous rule.. I have seen it all and never that. I know in some racing, such as even Nascar, if a team mate is a lap or more down, and he"crashes" to bring out a Dale Jr style caution, they penalize.. but this is insane. So, leader is out front by a bit, and cuts a tire down, and smacks, full course, he can't race the next race? Give me a break and start the petition BoBo! I'll sign it along with all of us.
What was wrong with Daniels car?

Re: Star Mazda Today at Houston
I second and third what Kieth says.
You're OK comes first.
That asinine rule is for the birds. It makes no sense at all.
If they feel crashing out, losing points and inflicting massive crash damage on yourself also deserves a one race ban as additional punishment then they need to double your points as a reward for covering the field without incident at Sebring.
Where do I sign the petition and send the letter/E-Mail to!

John, it's better not to start a letter writing campaign right now. The appeal is going through IMSA. More later...

Re: Star Mazda Today at Houston
The most obvious thing about this stupid rule is the myriad ways it would destroy a points race.
If you get down to the last two weeks of the season and the top two points leaders each cause a yellow, are you going to sit them both down for the final race of the season and not allow the fastest contenders to compete?!
Will sponsors and track owners support this? It takes the series away from the competitors and gives it to an ill conceived organizers rule book.

Fortunately, it was a Houston only rule. As John said, an appeal is in process. Stay tuned...
As always, I am forever grateful for everyone's support and hope to repay you all with great service when I put my coach/instructor hat on.

Re: Star Mazda Today at Houston
Opps, missed the Houston only detail... Still completely unfair rule...
Because you always honor us with great service Gerardo, you don't owe us a thing. This was an anomaly. Just get back on your Star Mazda horse and do what you always do.
