Today's Wall Street Journal (July 3, 2007) includes an article about a new private track being developed in Monticello, NY, about 80 miles northwest of NYC. Called the Drive & Race Club, it's designed to be what the Journal calls a "touring" track -- a place to drive your own car very fast, with on-staff instructors and many safety features designed to prevent accidents.
The track is about 3.5 miles around, with a clubhouse, garage facilities, a skidpad and a helipad.
Has anyone heard any buzz or inside info about this? Is it looking like a high-quality practice facility for serious drivers or an automotive playground for people with more money than talent?

The track layout and plans look great to me so far. Sounds like the facilities will be first-rate, but I have a feeling the preponderance of the members will belong to the second group you describe.

I met some of the people from the club by chance in Connecticut.
They showed me a track map and I said, "Gee it has kind of a VIR look to it." Sure enough the same guy laid out both. If that's the case it should be a great course to drive.
There are a few of these popping up around the country.
This one in particular sports a definite country club-type atmosphere....literally, substitute TRACK for 18 holes and you're thinking straight, based on the promotional package I was sent (if you don't know O'Hara, he is a great guy, very stand up...).
If I recall, it was around $100K to buy in (upfront) and then what I guess is normal high-end country club dues....but you get a heli-pad, a locker, etc etc I guess.
I was talking to a guy at the Summit Point race who is getting in and he seemed excited...then again, he also spent around $10K on sticker tires in that race..
Might be something only an opthalmologist could afford....ha ha.

Amen. When they start talking about building one in Kentucky - http://www.drivebluegrass.com/ a race track without horses, here, for Christ sakes - you know they are becoming common.
I ain't going anywhere they don't valet park my AirScooter!
such an odd pic I thought photoshop.....then thought it's so odd it doesn't need one, till I noticed the foot 'rudder' contraption, it just reminded me of those hand clappers (this option allows for "praying hands" configuration also).......Harsha, I considered your helmet, but this one seemed to fit better (total hijack, back to clubs)
