F5000 Gurney Eagle for sale

One of my Carmel, California acquaintances is selling his racecar. a F5000 Gurney-Eagle. The real deal, one of Big Dan’s own. Righteous stuff here. Reply to Steve if interested. He is probably NOT giving any test drives... link to all pertinent info below.

Well, sure, I'm interested. I'm also guessing I'm several hundred thousand dollars short.
Did I ever explain the difference between a large, pepperoni pizza and a Skippy instructor????????

Nahh. I think the asking price is 175. You're closer than you think.

And no, I don't believe I've ever heard an explanation as to the difference between the a large, peperoni piza and a Skippy instructor, although I'm quite sure I have never seen a pizza drink beer or buy shots of Jager...

Geeze. OK. One more time. The difference is that a large pepperoni pizza CAN feed a family of four. (rim shot) (groans).

Wow. Good deal!

While I'm trying to find out where the kids hid their piggy bank, I suddenly thought of all the 'friends' I'll have trying to help me transition from the 86 hp Turner to the 542 hp Eagle. Having witnessed Murphy/DiIorio etc. on the autocross with the stability control turned off I'm wondering if they make a piggy bank specifically for tires???

Re: F5000 Gurney Eagle for sale

Hello,

Steve here. I DO have the video and it's at the '10 Mitty if you hadn't guessed. I bought the camera to "evaluate" some things at Laguna Seca during testing and I left it on for Atlanta. Pretty much immediately got a bug splat the size of a baseball dead center. Then more bugs and rain. The vid is hard to watch. Top that with it being a) sprinkling b) first time I ever saw Atlanta c) gearing WAY too short d) ah... That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Thanks for posting my car here.

Steve

Re: F5000 Gurney Eagle for sale

Thanks for checking in Steve,

For those of us old enough to remember that car when it was new we'd gladly accept bugs on the Gopro, drizzle and short gears in Atlanta to sit in the drivers seat with the motor running. A wonderful piece of racing history that makes us appropriately envious and jealous.

Hope you find a worthy buyer.

Re: F5000 Gurney Eagle for sale

You've made me curious how to upload a video. I only took 3. Two testing at Laguna Seca and the aforementioned one at Road Atlanta. Here's the 2nd half of the Laguna Seca test. Just shaking the car down. Due to the limit on Youtube I clipped off the first half of the session which was the car sliding around on cold tires. It was 40 degrees in April, 2010. I'm open to critique

Re: F5000 Gurney Eagle for sale

Thanks for posting this. To save others the time and trouble, I put a stop watch on the laps. The early ones are in the 1:33 to 1:35 range, and a later one was a bit over 1:31. Clearly some power available in this engine. Great to see (and on perhaps my favorite track -- at least that I've been on so far).

Re: F5000 Gurney Eagle for sale

Hey thanks for the timing!

The car usually runs high 1:27's / low 1:28's at Laguna Seca.

New tires, no mufflers, and the planets aligned, I am convinced a 1:26 is in it. (May take another nut behind the wheel though!)

Hi Steve! I should have warned you, it is customary in this crowd to clock your video about 5% fast before posting. These days, EVERYBODY has a stopwatch app on their phone...

I'm sure there will be no shortage of nuts here volunteering to take a crack at it...

Re: F5000 Gurney Eagle for sale

Thanks. Wish I had race footage but I have enough to think about without a camera running!

The car is lots of fun at Laguna but it is REALLY fun on the bigger tracks like Road Atlanta, WGI, and Road America where it can really stretch it's legs. The kink is quite an "eye opener" (with all other orifices shut tight).

I have no idea on the SR at 5:00 he surely saw me so he pulled way the heck over and slowed to a crawl. It would appear that he ran off drivers right at the exit of T2 and then yanked it back on. It looks closer on the video than it really was (I hope). I try to be extra careful on open test days as there are a lot of disparate cars, drivers, and experience levels.

Steve

Re: F5000 Gurney Eagle for sale

So here is (hopefully) a unique perspective on Laguna Seca. Look at all the crap on the tires from the paddock (they never sweep). Same day as the other vid but this is the first session. Checking out something on the rear. Let me know when I've bored you (or when you find a buyer)

Last video. The first session at Road Atlanta. Hard to see anything at all. By Sunday we were running in the high 1:28's. Love the track.

Thumbs up Re: F5000 Gurney Eagle for sale

You don't get to whine about old tires and rusty driving when you win the race!
Well done and thanks for the update.

Re: F5000 Gurney Eagle for sale

Steve,
Very sorry to hear your time soaring in the eagle has come to an end.
Thanks so much for sharing the journey with us.
What will replace it?
Is there going to be a next chapter in your vintage racing book?

Thanks again,
Pat
